Der langjährige Domorganist der St. Hedwigs-Kathedrale zu Berlin ist seit 2020 im Ruhestand und widmet sich nun verstärkt der Konzerttätigkeit. Geboren 1954 in Wittichenau bei Hoyerswerda, studierte er an der Musikhochschule „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ zu Leipzig (Hauptfach Orgel bei Thomasorganist Prof. Hannes Kästner). Seit 1978 war er Organist der St. Hedwigs-Kathedrale zu Berlin, 1990 erfolgte seine Ernennung zum Domorganisten. Von 1990 war er auch Dozent an der Erzbischöflichen Kirchenmusikschule Berlin in den Fächern Orgelspiel und Improvisation bis zu deren Schließung 2003.
Zu seinen internationalen Auszeichnungen gehören der Bachpreis in Leipzig 1976, ein Diplom der „Tribune Internationale des Jeunes Interpretes“ in Bratislava 1983; 1987 gewann er den Improvisationswettbewerb in Halle.
Langjährige Konzerttätigkeit an St. Hedwig und Konzertreisen in Europa und in die USA, Rundfunk-, Schallplatten- und CD-Produktionen festigten seinen internationalen Ruf als Konzertorganist und Kirchenmusiker.
Neben reinen Orgelkonzerten hört man ihn auch gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Roswitha mit der Reihe „Worte wie Musik“, lyrisch-musikalischen thematischen Programmen.

The long-standing Cathedral organist of St. Hedwig’s cathedral in Berlin was born in Wittichenau near Hoyerswerda (Saxony) and studied at the Musikhochschule „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig (major subject organ with Hannes Kästner, St. Thomas‘ church organist).
He had been organist of St. Hedwig’s cathedral in Berlin since 1978 and since 1990 he also taught at the archiepiscopal church music school organ playing and improvisation. Since 2001 he teached organ improvisation at the University of Arts in Berlin too.
In 1976 he won the Bach Prize in Leipzig, in 1983 the „Tribune International des Jeunes Interpretes“ diploma in Bratislava, and in 1987 the first prize at the Improvisation Competition in Halle.
He made concert tours to various European countries and to the USA. His activities include recording for radio and the commercial market. In addition to organ concerts he is also acting together with his wife Roswitha Sauer with lyrical-musical programs.
